Cautious Clay (Dec. 2018)
If one asked how adolescent memories could be expressed in a musical form, they would need to look no further than the sounds of Cautious Clay. A growing artist, Clay understands what it means to express emotion and is approaching every moment he experiences through sonic lens unseen prior.
At times, it feels as though he reads our minds, speaking on feelings deep, yet not within the realm of articulation. There isn’t a note wasted between the lush production and floating vocals, crafting an energy of intensity but also stillness.
Paramind is blessed to be able to premiere Cautious Clay’s newest song, ‘Reasons’, a track that exemplifies the artistic leaps looming upon the new year for the freshly blossoming musician.
To begin, you recently just wrapped up a tour showing off a lot of your newly released music. Do you have any memories or moments from the time on the road that stick out as your favorites or truly special?
We had this one time where we stopped at a restaurant on our tour and the waiter didn’t have a clue what ginger was.
How would you compare the energy of a song live to that of a recording? What is it that you find the greatest difference between the two is?
When the band is clicking and we know exactly where we wanna go when we are on stage, the energy is completely different. The sonics of what we do together and the freedom we have is what makes the songs different live.
If you could perform live in one place in the world, where would it be and why there?
Just for the reason of being unrealistic, I would love to perform on an airplane, however possible.
Have you found yourself, with time, continually embracing your landscape of New York, or have you been working to bring in new perspectives into your sound?
I’m always inspired by something so I just try to listen and take in whatever I’m feeling at the time, whether that’s locations, movies, friends or people don’t like. I don’t restrict it only to my environment.
What did you find the biggest difficulties to be in putting together a cohesive project such as Blood Type and RESONANCE?
Subtracting things, whether that’s words or production.
What did you feel the greatest message was that you wanted others to collect and resonate with through your projects?
I anted people to remember to be themselves; to embrace themselves and the positive or negative forces that come with life.
Reflecting on next years upcoming release, what space did you find yourself in while creating it and have you found yourself moving away from that energy? Or is that a space you’re still within?
I have been using a lot of the same equipment and spaces to work but I’ve learned a lot from traveling as well. My energy for the most part has stayed consistent in my outlook.
Which album that you’ve heard within the last few months has had the biggest effect on you? Or just one that you’d heavily recommend to everyone out there?
Definitely Sunlight by Herbie Hancock, it’s been on repeat while I’m within this energy.
Where do you hope to continue growing both musically and personally? What avenues and ideas do you hope to explore and continue exploring?
I want to explore video concepts a lot more, as a whole that’s been something I’ve been wanting to focus on and connect to my work.
And as a final question, what would be your biggest words of wisdom towards those just beginning their musical journey and unsure where to go?
To simply make sure you feel confident in what you are creating.
